Yellow dock is a plant native to Europe and Asia. Also called "curled dock" or "Rumex Crispus," it is cultivated as a vegetable in Europe and grows throughout North America as a common weed. The part that may be used medicinally is the bitter root. In traditional herbal medicine, yellow dock is thought to contain many beneficial properties.  

The suggested intake of Yellow dock root:

  • There is no clinical evidence to support specific dosage recommendations for the yellow dock, and caution is warranted because of its oxalate and tannin content. Dosages traditionally 2 to 4 g of the dry root in a tea 3 times a day for no longer than 8 to 10 days.

Yellow dock may be used for pain and swelling (inflammation) of nasal passages and the respiratory tract, and as a laxative and tonic. It may be also used to treat bacterial infections and sexually transmitted diseases.  Some people use the yellow dock as toothpaste.  Historically, yellow dock may have been used for skin diseases, skin inflammation (dermatitis), rashes, a vitamin deficiency called scurvy, obstructive jaundice, and psoriasis with constipation.  This common plant is said to be rich in antioxidants that have been shown to reduce oxidative stress. It’s been used by Native American tribes used the root that may be of help for many conditions from alleviating external swelling and sores to constipation and blood cleansing.

Pregnant women or women trying to become pregnant, breastfeeding mothers, and infants shouldn’t take any herbal, medicinal, or natural intakes.  The only reason is for the sake of the little ones, the body has not yet developed its full immunity

Taking too much yellow dock can cause diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, excessive urination, skin irritation, and low blood levels of potassium and calcium. Don't use the raw or uncooked yellow dock. It can cause serious side effects including vomiting, heart problems, breathing difficulty, and even death.
